Mini Book Review: Shades of Wicked by Jeaniene Frost

This is the first book in the vampire paranormal romance Night Rebel series by Jeaniene Frost. The second book, Wicked Bite, is expected to release 7/30/19. This is the second spin-off series from Frost’s Night Huntress series. I would highly recommend you read that series, starting with Halfway to the Grave, and the other spin-offs first and in the order that Frost recommend’s on her website here, before reading this book. Reading the other works first gives better context to this book and prevents any spoilers – also they’re my favorites and superrrr good!

Shades of Wicked CR: AvonIn this thrilling new Night Rebel series set in New York Times bestselling author Jeaniene Frost’s Night Huntress world, sexy and ruthless vampire Ian finally meets his match!

The Rule Breaker

Master vampire Ian is unrepentant, shameless…and every shade of wicked. He’s made one too many enemies in his two centuries of existence, including Dagon, a demon who now lays claim to his soul. Ian’s only chance to escape Dagon is to join forces with a Law Guardian, but he’s never been able to abide by the rules for long.

The Law Maker

Veritas’ normal role is police, judge and jury to reprobates like Ian. But she has her own ax to grind with Dagon, so if she can use Ian as bait…well, all’s fair in law and war. As they scour supernatural hotspots to perfect their trap, Veritas soon realizes Ian’s devil-may-care, roguish image hides something much more powerful. And Ian discovers that Veritas has shocking secrets of her own. As they’re drawn to each other with a passion as intense as their peril, either love or justice will prevail. But each will have devastating consequences…

My three main thoughts from this book:

  • I never want to leave this world!!!!
  • Iannnnn
  • I cannnottttt wait for more, please don’t make meeeee

I was definitely not sure what to expect from this book but MAN! Ian’s pairing with Veritas was soo perfect. Veritas ended up being a really fun and surprising character for me and she definitely earned her place by Ian’s side. I loved learning more about who Ian is but it was kind of unexpected for me that the entire book was in Verita’s POV and we only get Ian’s POV at the epilogue. Speaking of the epilogue, Ian’s final words gave me freaking chilllllls! Also if you’re a fan of the other books in the world you’ll be happy to know there are cameos from our other baes! And as usual, Frost knows how to write a sex scene, sooo yeah, the steam is good, real good.

The other books in this universe focus a lot on the vampire world, ghouls, ghosts, magic wielders, necromancers, and even demons but it definitely seems like we’re diving more into the world of demons in this series and even new creatures we haven’t seen before. The best part of this paranormal urban fantasy world that Frost’s created is that there’s so much to it she can keep developing and expanding upon and yet it never feels overdone or too crowded.

Recommend to fans of Frost’s Night Huntress series and spin-offs, paranormal urban fantasy romance, and vampires!

5 stars!
